Salt reduction / desalination of the masonry

The principle of the Captive Head-Washing system (originally “Gregomatic”, now “BlueVac" Low-Pressure Captive Head-Washing) is a combination of a targeted water whirl, which produces a rinse action, together with a simultaneous vacuum action to remove dissolved or loose residue from the substrate. The system can also be used to rinse off bacteria (mould), low & high pH detergents, oils, fire damage soot and other contaminations from all washable surfaces including fibres (carpets). This patented system awarded Gold Medals at International Inventor’s in Geneva, Basle (Switzerland) and New York (USA).

Captive Head-Washing System is an alternative to the cocoon poultice system of desalination without increasing the water load in the substrate.

Test Samples have been conducted and the results are

A: dry surface (without pre-wetting) with captive head-wash procedure.

B: pre-wetting with de-ionised water previous day to mobilise salt ions. Then using the captive head-wash procedure.


In combination de-ionised pre-wetting and captive wash head procedure a significant salt reduction has been recorded not just on the surface but up to a depth of 10cm. In this statement it is to say that it has not been a relocation of salts into depth.

The highest salt reduction is noted in the first cm, and then towards deeper ground the effect becomes less. The effect with captive wash head is compatible with traditional poulticing procedures.

In the case of not pre-wetting the surface the effect of a salt reduction is less significant.

With the captive wash head procedure, as a purely cleaning action to remove residue of a poultice or laminate, the humidity of substrate has not risen, that means the negative pressure (vacuum) of the wash head is bigger than the capillary effect of the substrate.
